Decline of Electrical Fires Due to Fire Retardant Materials Like Vinyl

New technologies and the development of fire-retardant materials like vinyl have helped the decline of residential fires caused by electrical distribution equipment. 

Used as a protective sheathing for wires and cables, vinyl-coated wiring is valued by electricians for its dielectric performance (meaning it does not conduct electricity), flexibility, range of thickness and its availability in nearly any color.


"Vinyl’s chemical components make it inherently fire-retardant, and its durability resists moisture and abrasions that could disrupt electrical service," said Tim Burns, president of the Vinyl Institute, a trade association.


Vinyl began replacing commercial fabric-braid wire coverings shortly after World War II, having proven its superior performance to the U.S. military. Now used in commercial, industrial and residential settings, vinyl coverings help maintain the safety and integrity of telephone systems, power cables and rigid indoor and outdoor conduit.

"The use of vinyl ensures that we can continue to enjoy all the conveniences of modern day life – from our computers to our microwaves – safely," said Burns. "Homeowners can sleep well knowing they have vinyl electrical components in their homes."
